Hannan Meats ‘steak’ claim to best beef in European Angus Cattle Society Awards
4th April 2011
As well as picking up the supreme champion award the County Armagh company also won best sirloin and best fillet steak in the over-15 employees category of the EACSA sponsored event.
The award for best rib-eye in this category went to Crossgar Meats with the beef sourced from Dexter cattle.
Meanwhile, in the under-15 employee category, Millar Meats from Irvinestown scored a superb hat-trick by winning all three classes – best sirloin, best fillet and best rib-eye.
The winners were announced at a special charity awards evening which was held at Tandragee Golf Club on April 1.
Commenting on the Awards, European Angus Cattle Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin said, “The standard was very high throughout the competition but Hannan Meats came out tops both in the controlled taste test and with celebrity judge, local rally driver, Kenny McKinstry.
Open to farmers, butchers, retailers and processors the actual competition was staged at CAFRE, Loughry Campus back in January.
“We decided to wait until now to reveal the winners and took the decision to organise a gala charity evening in support of the Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Unit Fund as part of the proceedings,” explained Harry. “We aim to build on the initial success of the competition and our intentions are to make this an annual event.”
