Hannan Meats lift supreme title at European Angus Awards

Moira-based Hannan Meats has raised the steaks in the Northern Ireland beef sector by lifting the title of Supreme Champion for the second year in a row in a province-wide steak tasting competition organised by the European Angus Cattle Society.

As well as picking up the Supreme Champion Award the County Armagh company also won best fillet steak and best sirloin steak in the over-15 employees category of the EACS sponsored event.  The Supreme Champion beef was sourced from Shorthorn cattle. The award for best rib-eye in the over-15 employees category went to Cloughbane Farm Shop, Pomeroy.

In the under 15-employees category Bruces Hill Farm Shop, Ballymena, who were entering the competition for the first time, scored a winning double picking up an Award for best rib-eye steak and best vegetable roll.
Moira-based George McCartney of McCartney’s of Moira won best sirloin in the under-15 employees category.

Meanwhile Millar Meats from Irvinestown were also making a return to the winners rostrum as they were presented with the Award for best fillet steak in the under 15-employees category.
H & J Carnduff of Newtownards also scored a double, winning both the traditional beef  and gourmet beef sausage classes in this year’s competition.
The winners were announced at a special charity awards evening which was held at Tandragee Golf Club on  Friday night, March 30th.

Commenting on the Awards, European Angus Cattle Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin said, “The standard was very high in all categories but in the steak tasting Hannan Meats came out on top both in the blind tasting and with celebrity judge, Gary Hamilton, player manager at Glenavon Football Club while in the sausage, gourmet sausage and vegetable roll categories, which we were staging for the first time this year, H & J Carnduff  achieved a tremendous double.”

Open to farmers, butchers, retailers and processors both the steak tasting and the sausage and vegetable roll tastings were staged at CAFRE Loughry campus in Cookstown.
This is the second year the competition has been staged and as well as announcing the winners at the Awards evening an auction and raffle was held in aid of the European Angus Cattle Society’s chosen charity, the Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Unit Fund (NICCUF).
