Young heifer takes top spot in European Angus classes

14th July 2012

David Lester’s young heifer Aughnagurgan Erica took top honours in the European Angus section of the Castlewellan Show being named as overall champion and winner of the Tughan Cup.

This was David’s first year participating in the European Angus classes at the County Down show and the Keady man was absolutely delighted with top spot.

Putting Aughnagurgan Erica through her paces in the Parade ring was Gilford young handler, Cathy McGaffin.

Title of Reserve Champion went to the Magowan family’s young bull, Bannwater Jacko.
The Magowan’s, from Rathfriland, also came out top in the cow, any age, in calf or with calf at foot class.

At the show, the European Angus Cattle Society also took the opportunity to promote its new Beef Scheme initiative which was launched the previous weekend during an Open Day and Young Handlers event staged at Harry McGaffin’s farm in Gilford.

Judging of the European Angus classes at Castlewellan was by Peter Hannan from Moira.

European Angus champion and winner of the Tughan Cup was Aughnagurgan Erica. Pictured with the winning calf are owner, David Lester, young handler, Cathy McGaffin and judge, Peter Hannan.
