European Angus winners put in star performances at the UK Great Taste Awards
9th August 2012
Companies that competed in this year’s European Angus Steak Tasting Competition were amongst the 46 local food and drink companies that chalked up a record 195 gold stars for quality products in this year’s UK Great Taste Awards.
European Angus Supreme Champion Hannan Meats set an all-time record in the awards by winning 26 gold stars, the highest ever won by a local producer.
Cloughbane Farm Shop and Bruces Hill Farm Shop, two other European Angus Steak Tasting competition award-winning companies, also featured in this year's Great Taste Awards along with EA competitors, Kettyle Irish Foods and Dean Irwin's Greenmount Farm Shop.
Hannan Meats, McCartney’s Butchers, Cloughbane Farm Shop and Kettyle Irish Foods were four of only five local companies that achieved the top award of three stars and they will now be in the running to be named as Northern Ireland Regional Champion and overall Supreme Champion, a title won last year by McCartney’s Butchers for their corned beef.
In the Great Taste Awards all products are judged by at least three different judging panels at three venues. This year over 8,800 products were entered from more than 2,500 different companies.
All the tasting is blind and the 350 plus judges are made up of Fine Food Retailers, Chefs, Restaurant Critics, Food Writers and other industry experts.
The Awards are the acknowledged benchmark of speciality food throughout the whole of the United Kingdom.
