European Angus beef scheme farmer Paul Turley is Farm Quality Assured Farmer of the Year 2012

10th November 2012

European Angus Cattle Society beef scheme farmer, Paul Turley from Downpatrick, has been named ‘Farm Quality Assured Farmer of the Year’ in the Farming Life and Danske Bank Awards 2012.

Paul, who grazes his lifestock outside all year round – nine to ten months on grass and two to three months on kale/rape was presented with his award at a glitzy affair held recently in the Ramada Hotel at Shaws Bridge in Belfast.

Paul’s farming enterprise has gone from zero to 150 cows over a five-year period.
He describes the grassland management system that he has in place on his farm as “a vital part of that enterprise”.

Beef from his herd formed part of the first consignment in the newly introduced European Angus Beef Scheme which made its way to London recently as part of special activities planned around the city’s much lauded Restaurant Festival.

It was served up as the food of choice at ‘A Carnivores Feast’ at the restaurant of celebrated chef, Mark Hix.

During the Feast, Mark Hix, Peter Hannan of Hannan Meats and wine expert, John Hutton of Fields Morris Verdin took guests through a menu that celebrated some of their favourite cuts.

The Farm Quality Assured Farmer of the Year Award was sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Commission.

The cattle on Paul Turley’s Downpatrick farm have been grass fed from birth.
