Call for entries as European Angus launches 2013 Steak Tasting Competition

14th January 2013

It’s that time of year again with the European Angus Cattle Society issuing a call for entries in the 2013 EACS Steak Tasting Competition which aims to find the best steaks in Northern Ireland.

This is the third year that the Society has staged the competition and European Angus Secretary Harry McGaffin is hopeful that it will be even bigger and better than previous years.

“We have had tremendous support since the launch of the competition in 2011 and we hope that trend will continue,” explained Harry. “We are again inviting entries from anyone involved with the beef industry sector – farmers, butchers, processors and retailers.
“The format remains the same with the competition being held in two categories, Under 15 employees and Over 15 employees, with three beef classes – Fillet Steak, Sirloin Steak and Rib-eye Steak.
“Last year we also introduced Beef Sausage and Vegetable Roll categories however this year we are running with Beef Sausage categories, both traditional and gourmet beef sausages, and a quarter pound beef burger class.”

Tastings will again be carried out at CAFRE Loughry Campus, Cookstown during February 2013, week commencing Monday 25th February, with the winners being announced at a Special Awards Evening and Dinner which is being held in Tandragee Golf Club on Saturday, 16th March, 2013.
The competition is open to all breeds of cattle.

“Those entering steaks in the competition will participate in the blind tastings while once again we hope to engage various Young Farmers’ Club members in the blind tasting of the sausages and the beef burgers,” continued Harry.

Competition cost is £15 per entry and entry forms are available from the European Angus Cattle Society, telephone 07715 584 887 or log onto where entry forms are available for download.

Serving up the opportunity to put taste to the test with the launch of the European Angus Steak Tasting Competition 2013 are, from left to right, Harry McGaffin, Secretary of the European Angus Cattle Society, David Jones, Head Chef at Tandragee Golf Club where the Awards Ceremony will take place on Saturday the 16th March and Des Brady, Food Technologist with CAFRE Loughry Campus where the tastings will take place.
