‘Champion’ evening held at European Angus tasting event

5th March 2013

Six of the best and then more!
The more being the selection of the Supreme Champion steak and overall winner of the European Angus Steak Tasting Competition 2013.

That was the task facing John Thompson, Past President of the Ulster Farmers Union on Monday night at CAFRE Loughry campus as he judged the six finalists in this year’s competition.

The best fillet, sirloin and rib-eye steaks in the Under-15 employees and Over-15 employees categories had already been decided on the previous Monday and now it was down to the big one – the Supreme Champion steak.

Once again in charge of the cooking was chef Gary Scott from the Salt Restaurant in Portadown.

Commenting on his role as head judge John Thompson said: “It was a very difficult job as they were all excellent steaks.
“The competition has gathered momentum over the last couple of years and is highly regarded within the beef sector with the European Angus accolades highly sought after.”

If you are wondering who got John’s vote in the taste ‘steaks’ you will have to wait a while longer as all will be revealed at a special Charity Gala Dinner and Awards presentation evening being held at Tandragee Golf Club on Saturday, March 16.

Also to be revealed at the Awards night will be the winners of the beef sausage, gourmet sausage and beefburger categories of the EACS tasting competition.

The judging of these categories, again carried out as blind tastings, was undertaken by members of Cookstown, Collone, Rathfriland and Moneyrea Young Farmers’ Clubs.

“While the steak heats are blind tasted by the various contestants we invite members of Young Farmers Clubs along to judge the sausages and the beefburgers and this has proved very popular,” explained European Angus secretary, Harry McGaffin.
As well as the Awards being a much sought after accolade there is also a charity element to the competition with an auction and raffle held in aid of the European Angus Cattle Society’s chosen charity, ‘the Make a Wish Foundation’ during the presentation dinner.

Tickets are already on sale for the event and can be purchased by contacting European Angus Cattle Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin on 077 1558 4887.
