European Angus Cattle Society marks successful year at AGM

8th April 2013

It was a successful year capped by a ‘series of firsts’.
That was the message from European Angus Cattle Society secretary, Harry McGaffin as he addressed the Society’s AGM held at the Ballinderry Inn in Moira on Thursday, 4th April.

The ‘series of firsts’ being referred to included the introduction of a Society Open Day and Young Handlers event, the launch of a Society Newsletter and the launch of a beef scheme initiative in partnership with Hannan Meats of Moira.
And the message was that the Society aims to continue with its ambitious programme that will help producers breed a profitable beef herd.

Through supply chain partner Hannan Meats European Angus beef is now being supplied to some of the leading chefs and top restaurants throughout the UK and Ireland.
“That’s something we aim to continue building on,” explained Harry McGaffin. “And for 2013 we have another series of firsts lined up which includes participation at this year’s Balmoral Show and Allam’s Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale.
“At the Balmoral Show this year we are pleased to announce that European Angus classes will be sponsored by Devenish Nutrition.
“We are delighted to welcome Devenish Nutrition on board as a new sponsor and look forward to working in partnership with them as we continue to grow.”

In attendance at the Society AGM from Devenish Nutrition were marketing manager, Simon Caughey and Ciaran Conway, beef nutritionist, who provided the assembled audience with an overview of company activities.

Devenish Nutrition is a leading edge agri-technology company headquartered in Belfast but with two sites in the United States, in Iowa and Minnesota. Dedicated to the research, development, and manufacture of quality premixes, pre-starters, starters and concentrates along with speciality products for the intensive livestock sector the company exports to more than 20 countries worldwide.

Ciaran’s presentation was followed by that of guest speaker, Derek Shaw from Gilford.
Derek provided detailed insight into his beef farming activities in Australia as a Director and board member of the North Australian Pastoral Company.

NAPCO is a large, privately owned Australian cattle company which manages in the region of 240,000 cattle, including calves.
Derek delivered a fascinating presentation into how the company has developed a composite breed which can withstand the harsh Australian environment whilst minimising on labour input.
He explained how the company has been working hard on genetic improvement, growth rate and quality of produce.
In producing what they see as an ideal composite breed for the region the company has worked with several species of cattle including Braham, Red Angus and the African Tuli.

The company produces beef cattle which are grass fed and grain finished before selling on to processors who service both the domestic market and international customers.
The company’s bullock beef is destined mainly for Japan and the Far East whilst its heifers remain within the home market.

Derek has been commuting from his home in Gilford to Australia on a regular basis for the last 14 years. Prior to his involvement with the North Australian Pastoral Company he was involved in cotton production down under.

His presentation was accompanied by a series of slides which underlined the sheer scale of the operation. Somewhat surprisingly the company only employs a total of 187 people.

Not surprisingly there were numerous questions from the floor and the talking continued as tea and coffee was served.
