Taste is put to the test in the 2014 European Angus Steak Tasting Competition sponsored by Devenish Nutrition

24th February 2014

The heats of the 2014 European Angus Steak Tasting Competition sponsored by Devenish Nutrition have taken place at CAFRE Loughry Campus in Cookstown and the countdown is now on to see who will be named ‘Supreme Champion’ in this the fourth year of the prestigious competition which is open to all breeds of cattle.

The ‘Supreme Champion’ steak will be selected from the various class winners in the two categories, those with under 15 employees and those with more than 15 employees, and tasked with that job this year is guest judge, Michele Shirlow, Chief Executive of Food NI.

“There are three classes in the two categories – best sirloin steak, best fillet steak and best rib-eye,” explained European Angus Cattle Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin. “This coming Monday, March 3, competition chef Gary Scott of Sally McNally’s Restaurant in Portadown will cook the six winning steaks which will then be put to the ultimate taste test by Michele.
“And like the heats it will be carried out as a blind tasting. It’s going to be a very difficult job as the standard of the entries has been extremely high.”

The competition itself has grown year-on-year and for the first time a major sponsor has been brought on board, leading agri-technology company, Devenish Nutrition.

“The competition has grown to such an extent that the support of Devenish Nutrition has been both welcome and very necessary,” added Harry.

Commenting on the company’s support for the event, Stephen Agnew, Ruminant Nutritionist at Devenish Nutrition said: “The Steak Tasting Competition is a great opportunity for the local industry to showcase the fantastic produce Northern Ireland has to offer and we are delighted to be involved.”

As well as the judging of the six steaks that have made it through to the final, members of various Young Farmers’ Clubs will be on hand to blind taste the beef sausages, gourmet beef sausages and beefburgers that have been entered in this year’s competition.
“This is the format that we have adopted in the sausage and beefburger classes and it has proved very successful,” continued Harry.

The winners of all classes, along with the ‘Supreme Champion’ will be revealed at a special Charity Gala Dinner and Awards presentation evening being held at the Bannville House Hotel in Banbridge on Saturday, March 15.

Dinner and entertainment is being provided on the night and an auction and raffle will be held in aid of the European Angus Cattle Society’s chosen charity, ‘the Make a Wish Foundation’.
