Killylea farmer wins European Angus herd competition

29th September 2014

Killylea farmer, Robert Steenson, took the top honour in a newly created herd competition organised by the European Angus Cattle Society.

The event, sponsored by Bannwater Services, was judged by Simmental and Charolais breeder,  Joe Wilson from Rathfriland.
Robert Steenson also won the best cow and calf class in the competition.

The best bull award went to Banbridge farmer, Sam Hughes while Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin from Gilford, lifted the award for the best cow.

Rathfriland-based Andrew Magowan was presented with the best heifer award.

The awards presentation took place at the Magowan family farm in Rathfriland where a barbecue was enjoyed by all participants and guests.

A big thank-you was given to Nigel O’Hare of Euro Spar in Mayobridge for donating the burgers for the event.

Commenting on the quality of the entries in the competition Joe Wilson said: “It was a pleasure to be asked by the European Angus Cattle Society to visit the various farms and to judge the competition and it was very interesting to see the results of the EA approach and what they are aiming for in terms of shape and length by working with Angus and Limousin genetics.”

The herd competition will now become an annual event amongst European Angus Cattle Society members with breeders competing for the Bannwater Services Cup.
