Champion evening lined up at Gala Dinner to announce the winners in the 2015 European Angus Steak Tasting Competition sponsored by Devenish

10th March 2015

The steaks have been raised and the countdown is now on to see who will be named ‘Supreme Champion’ in the 2015 European Angus Steak Tasting Competition sponsored by Devenish.

Judging the six finalists in this year’s competition staged at CAFRE Loughry Campus was celebrity chef and food writer, Paula McIntyre.

The best fillet, sirloin, and rib-eye steaks in the Under 15 and Over 15 employees categories had already been decided during the blind tasting heats and Paula was tasked with the job of selecting the Supreme Champion steak.

Now all will be revealed at a Gala Dinner and Awards Evening being staged at the Bannville House Hotel in Banbridge on March 21.

Also to be revealed at the Awards night will be the winners of the beef sausage, gourmet beef sausage, beefburger and added value beef product categories.

The judging of these categories, again carried out as blind tastings, was undertaken by members of Collone Young Farmers Club and a judging panel from the Women’s Institute during the evening.

“With the added value beef product category introduced as a new addition to this year’s competition we needed to add to the judging panel and the Women’s Institute kindly came on board to assist with this,” explained Harry McGaffin, Secretary of the European Angus Cattle Society. “Now into its fifth year and with the competition growing in size it has been very important to have had the continuing support of Devenish and as a Society we are extremely thankful for that support.
“Importantly, this is an open competition – open to all breeds of cattle and beef producers, butchers, delis and retail outlets.”

“We are delighted to have played our part in promoting local food excellence and like
everyone else are now looking forward to the Awards Dinner when the winners of all classes and the Supreme Champion will be revealed,” said Simon Caughey, Marketing Manager at Devenish.
