Moneyreagh farmer wins European Angus herd competition

The Bluebell bank herd of Hugh Dickson and family from Moneyreagh blossomed at this year’s European Angus herd competition taking the top honour and best overall herd award.
The event, now into its second year, was sponsored by HVS Animal Health of Crossgar with judging carried out by Sam Thompson, a Charolois, Limousin and commercial cattle breeder from Newry.
At an awards ceremony and barbecue, held at European Angus Cattle Society Secretary, Harry McGaffin’s Blackberry Hill farm in Gilford, Hugh Dickson was presented with the European Angus Herd Cup sponsored by the Magowan family from Rathfriland. Making the presentation was Scottish European Angus breeder, Willie Lawson, who had travelled from Auchterarder in Perthshire to attend the event.
The Dickson family also lifted the award for best heifer. The best stock bull award went to Sam Hughes and family’s Milltown herd, Banbridge. The Hughes family also picked up an award for best cow and calf.
Meanwhile European Angus Secretary, Harry McGaffin, won the best cow award, picking up a new shield donated by the Hughes family as well as the class shield.
European Angus breeder, Andrew Magowan thanked everyone for participating in this year’s event and paid special tribute to judge, Sam Thompson, sponsor, David Ellwood of HVS Animal Health and to Willie Lawson for presenting the awards.
Special thanks was also given to Harry McGaffin for hosting the awards ceremony and the barbecue.
